Chapter 20: Tucker Lyttle and the RUC, a reader's guide

Official title: The role of Thomas 'Tucker' Lyttle and his relationship with RUC officers

What this chapter covers

Chapter 20 deals with Thomas "Tucker" Lyttle, a senior figure in the UDA in West Belfast in the 1980s, and his contacts with RUC officers. Because he is dead and his role has been widely reported, the report names him.

Key points

The chapter examines the nature of Lyttle's relationship with the police, what information passed between them, and whether that relationship had any bearing on the planning of the Finucane murder or on the failure to prevent it. It fits with the report's broader concern, set out in chapter 17, about why the West Belfast UDA was not disrupted before February 1989.

How to read it

As elsewhere in the report, conclusions about individuals are de Silva's assessments of the documentary evidence. Readers wanting the detail should go to the chapter itself in the official report.
