The High Court overturns the ban on Fatma Karume
Dar es Salaam. The High Court of Tanzania overturned the lawyer’s ethics committee ruling which barred former TLS chairwoman Fatma Karume from practicing in mainland Tanzania and ordered that the well-founded decision be referred to the ethics committee.
This now provides an opportunity to defend herself after she was permanently removed on September 24 from the list of lawyers.
On September 20, 2020, the Lawyers’ Ethics Committee suspended lawyer Fatma Karume from practicing in mainland China due to remarks she made in her submission in a case challenging the appointment of Professor Adelardus Kilangi as Attorney General (AG) of Tanzania.

The committee then claimed to have found Ms. Karume guilty of serious misconduct and ordered that her name be removed from the list of lawyers in Tanganyika.
Fatma Karume was counsel in a case filed by Mr. Ado Shaibu, then Secretary of Ideology, Publicity and Public Communications of ACT-Wazalendo and the Respondent was the late President John Magufuli.
In the affidavit, Mr. Shaibu argued that Professor Kilangi’s appointment was unconstitutional.
