Obituary of Ira Meyers (2021) – Lafayette, LA

The funeral will be on Wednesday December 22, 2021 at 1:00 p.m. at La Chapelle de Martin & Castille for Sister Léa Meyers, MHS, (Sr. Vincent de Paul) former Ira Léa Meyers who passed away on Sunday December 19, 2021 at Prompt Succor Nursing Home at Opelousas, at the age of 94. The Right Reverend Chester C. Arceneaux, VF, Rector of Saint John the Evangelist Cathedral, will lead the funeral services. Lea, the daughter of the late Adolph and Grace Portie Meyers, was born January 12, 1927 in Sulfur, Louisiana. She attended Grammar and High School at Hackberry High School in Hackberry, LA., Where she graduated in 1945. She received a BA in Education from USL (now ULL) in Lafayette, LA and certification in librarianship. Entered the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament in 1951, she made her perpetual vows in 1956. At the time of her death, she was in her 70th year of religious life. Sr. Lea spent 26 years in Catholic school education as an elementary and middle school teacher and as an elementary school librarian. Her ministry led her to attend schools in Louisiana, notably in Saint-Maurice in New Orleans; Saint Michael at Crowley; Sacré-Coeur in Pineville and Mississippi at Notre-Dame des Victoires in Pascagoula. For the next 32 years, Sr. Lea worked at the Lafayette Parish Library as a researcher for children’s books until her retirement in 2012. Sr. Lea was always on top of the news, especially the news. local and national politics. She exercised her right to vote until she was 90 and saw voting not only as a right and a privilege, but also as a duty. She was a sports enthusiast who loved Saints and LSU but followed all sports. Sr. Lea will be remembered as an interesting person with a bubbly personality. She was easily turned on and always ready to try something new. She loved her family and was devoted to them. She loved to cook, bake and make sweets. She was artistic and always worked on “small projects”. She wanted to be busy because being busy kept her young. Sr Léa found people interesting and had many loyal friends who were dear to her. She will be sadly missed by her loving nephews and nieces and her religious family, the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament. She was predeceased by her parents; one sister, Lois Meyers; one brother, Leroy Meyers; one niece, Denise Alford; and nephews, Michael Alford and Brian DesOrmeaux. Sister Léa’s visitation will take place on Wednesday, December 22, 2021 from 9 a.m. until time of funeral at the Martin & Castille Funeral Home in the city center. A Rosary service will be held at 11:00 am, recited by Brady LeBlanc. Interment will follow funeral services at Calvary Cemetery in Lafayette, LA. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made in Sr. Lea’s name to the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament, PO Box 90037, Lafayette, LA. 70509-0037.
