Flower Flash, the new book by famous floral designer Lewis Miller, to be released by Monacelli

“Turning my job on the head has allowed me to share my passion for flowers with my fellow New Yorkers,” says Miller. “Surprising them with the glory of nature for no other reason than to bring beauty into their lives is a great way to start my day.”
Nearly five years and over 90 flashes later, those elaborate bursts of jubilant blooms on trash cans, bus awnings, construction sites, and traffic medians have brought moments of fun and wonder to New Yorkers. and flower lovers everywhere.
Flash Flower is a beautiful and poignant look behind the scenes of over 90 installations. The book‘s kaleidoscopic, collage-like design reflects the spontaneous energy of Flashes, the dynamic spirit of New York City, and the myriad of historical sources of art from which Miller draws his inspiration. Divided into three sections – The First Flash, Beauty Before Dawn and Beauty in the Dark – this must-read book tells the story of the first provisional flashes in fall 2016, the confident flashes through early 2020 and the pandemic flashes. Until now.
The lavish book cover features a specially designed flash shot in front of the iconic New York Public Library, covered with a section of a 17th-century still life by Dutch painter Jacob Vosmaer. The juxtaposition of the two images testifies to the inspiration that Miller draws from historical art, and that he considers his Flashes to be part of this continuum, but also something entirely new that mixes decorative art, street art and floral design.
Monacelli, a Phaidon company, will publish Flash Flower through Lewis miller at October 19, 2021, and a corresponding numbered limited-edition signed photographic print will be available this fall. More information can be found at phaidon.com.
